Tattoo Aftercare & Activities: When You Can Swim, Gym, and Shower

The rule of thumb: keep a new tattoo dry and unrubbed until the surface is closed (about 2 weeks). Here's the activity-by-activity timeline so you don't set back healing.

Showering

Yes — shower normally, but keep it short and gentle. Use lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, avoid direct high-pressure spray on the tattoo, and pat dry with a paper towel. No long baths.

Swimming / pools / hot tubs

Wait 2–3 weeks. Submerging a fresh tattoo in pool, lake, or hot-tub water is the fastest way to invite infection — standing water is full of bacteria. Until the surface is fully closed, keep it out of the water entirely.

Gym & exercise

Light movement is fine from about day 10. Avoid friction on the tattoo (no tight straps or equipment pressing on it), and manage sweat — wipe gently and re-wash if you sweat heavily. Skip heavy sessions that push blood flow and swelling in the first week.

Sun, sauna, steam rooms

Avoid them while healing. UV fades fresh ink and a fresh tattoo burns easily; saunas and steam rooms are also warm, humid, bacteria-friendly environments. Once healed, SPF 30+ is the habit for life.

FAQ

Can you go swimming with a new tattoo?

Not for 2–3 weeks. Submerging a fresh tattoo in pools, lakes, or hot tubs risks infection. Showers are fine; soaking is not.

Can you exercise with a new tattoo?

Light exercise from about day 10 is fine. Avoid friction on the tattoo, manage sweat, and skip heavy sessions in the first week.

Can you go to the gym on day 1?

Not a good idea — heavy sweating and friction on day 1 raise infection and irritation risk. Ease back in after the first week, gently.
